Honey Joys Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups Cornflakes

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick or 115g) unsalted butter

  • 1/3 cup (115g) honey

  • 1/3 cup (65g) granulated sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a muffin tin with paper cupcake liners.

  2. Melt Ingredients: In a saucepan, melt the butter, honey, and sugar together over low heat. Stir constantly until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture becomes a syrupy consistency.

  3. Combine with Cornflakes: Remove the saucepan from heat and gently fold in the Cornflakes, making sure they are fully coated with the syrup mixture.

  4. Spoon into Muffin Tin: Using a spoon, carefully divide the Cornflakes mixture into the prepared muffin tin, filling each cupcake liner.

  5. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the Honey Joys are lightly golden.

  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the Honey Joys to cool in the muffin tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, they are ready to be served.

Enjoy your Honey Joys! They are best eaten the day they are made but can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.

Honey Joy History

The origins of Honey Joys are somewhat nebulous, but they are most commonly associated with Australian cuisine and are a staple at children's parties, school fêtes, and various celebrations. The recipe is thought to have gained popularity in the mid-20th century, around the same time that pre-sweetened breakfast cereals like Cornflakes became widely available. The Kellogg Company, which produces Cornflakes, has often been credited with popularizing the recipe, as it provided an easy and delicious way to use their product. The simplicity of the ingredients—Cornflakes, honey, sugar, and butter—made it accessible and affordable, contributing to its widespread appeal.

Over the years, Honey Joys have become a nostalgic treat for many Australians, evoking memories of childhood and simpler times. They have also found their way into various community cookbooks and family recipe collections, sometimes with slight variations such as the addition of coconut, nuts, or even chocolate. While they may not have a long or elaborate history, Honey Joys hold a special place in the hearts of those who grew up enjoying them. Their ease of preparation and crowd-pleasing nature continue to make them a popular choice for gatherings, ensuring that this humble treat remains a part of Australian culinary tradition.
